Manufacturers can make it very difficult to determine the age of appliances. Today I'll be speaking with a plumber about my options - should I add a new hot water heater to supply the new bathroom, and leave the original one in place until it ceases to perform? Or should I give it a gold star for good service and retire it gracefully? I'm well aware from reviewing many home inspection reports with my buyers that 37 years is way beyond the life expectancy of hot water heaters! Can we file this under - they don't make them like they used to? Last night, I decided to investigate its age - and much to my surprise I discovered my hot water heater is original to the home, thanks to the handy chart provided by Jim Hanson, an expert home inspector and contributor to Active Rain. Never really paid too much attention to my hot water heater - has served me well trouble-free since I purchased the property in 2001. My cabin on Lake Oconee was built in 1977, and recently I decided to build a small addition - including a master bedroom suite complete with soaking tub.
